hemp
What's the turn-of-the millennium way to indulge in hemp?
The smoke- and drug-free way: in your beauty products! The oil from hemp seeds contains a mega dose of essential fatty acids, so it is said to work wonderfully as a moisturizer.
The Body Shop has a new line of skin-care products for dry skin, including Hemp Elbow Grease, Hemp 3 in 1 Oil and Hemp Lip Conditioner. And Alterna Enzymetherapy Hemp shampoos and conditioners (which come in gorgeous, brightly hued bottles) aim to infuse the hair with moisture, strength and shine. Give 'em a try -- just don't inhale.
"Hemp is not marijuana and it's not a drug," reports Kimberlee Mitchell, director of public relations for Alterna, manufacturers of a hemp seed oil-based haircare line based in Los Angeles, California. "Hemp and marijuana are both from the cannabis family, but they are two very different plants."
Mitchell explains industrial hemp, used to create a variety of goods, from clothing to car parts and now shampoos and body care, is THC (drug) free-the levels are so low, you could smoke a bushel of the stuff and not get high.
"Hemp seed oil is one of the richest sources of essential fatty acids and essential amino acids, which are vital nutrients responsible for strong, healthy keratin formation," Mitchell explains. "The oil helps maintain hair's strength, health and natural appearance."
